Ancient Sumer: Design an Instrument
Children will participate in a short study of the importance of music in Ancient Sumer as well as the instruments used. Children will have opportunities to look at instruments uncovered by archaeologists studying the area and will learn about the science of sound before designing, making, and evaluating their own instruments.
All learning objectives are aligned with the 2014 National Curriculum of England.
This pack includes lesson plans, rubrics, and editable rubrics to support with the learning process.

Teams & Athletes: Sports Equipment Design (Explanation Text and Persuasive Text BUNDLE)
Great to tie in with the 2018 Olympic Games!
Children will look at how sports equipment has changed over time before making a modification of their own.
Children will follow the DT process outlined in the 2014 National Curriculum of England, designing their own prototype, making their prototype, and then participating in peer- and self- evaluation of their prototype.
When finished the design process, there are also resources included for writing an explanation text (of how their sports equipment has changed over time or how their new sports equipment modifications will work); and writing a persuasive text including an advert about their product.

Fortune Hunters: Jewelry Design
Children will investigate jewelry design from around the world before designing their own.
In the past, I have used the finished jewelry to sell for our school’s art show.

Fortune Hunters: Crown Study (Chronology & Explanation Text)
Children will learn about the significance of crowns before looking at their chronology and writing an explanation text either about how they have changed over time or the significance of the different parts of a crown.

Design Your Own Candle (STEAM)
2014 National Curriculum of England’s Design Technology (Key Stage 2) objectives will be followed, as children learn about the history of candles and candle making before prototyping, designing, making, and evaluating their own candle.

Design a Hat with a Job Using littleBits (STEAM)
Children will prototype different hat designs and with inputs and outputs using littleBits to design and make a hat with a job.
Children will follow Design Technology curriculum objectives as they prototype, design, make, and evaluate their hats.

Vikings: Design a T-Shirt & Explanation Text
Children will look at different symbols significant to the Vikings and will design a tshirt including the symbols. They will then write an explanation text that describes the different symbols included, as well as the reasons for the design choices.
In the past, this unit has worked really well at the end of a Viking study, where the children can show off what they’ve learned.

Vikings: Battle Modifications with littleBits
Children will look at the history of Viking warfare and weapons during their invasion of the UK. Children will then design their own defence or weapon modification with littleBits based on a Viking design.
In the past, I have introduced this lesson dressed as a Monk at Lindisfarne with the light off and candles lit. I play audio in the background of Monks singing before acting frightened at the arrival of Vikings coming ashore.

Base slime recipes are provided - the slime can be made ahead of time for the children to evaluate, or the children can participate in the recipes to reinforce their understanding of fractions (halves).

This resource has been made using the ratio and proportion objectives for Year 6 from the 2014 National Curriculum of England:
Solve problems involving relative sizes of two quantities where missing values can be found by using integer multiplication and division facts
Solve problems involving the calculation of percentages (of measures, and such as 15% of 360) and the use of percentages for comparison
Solve problems involving similar shapes where the scale factor is known or can be found
Solve problems involving unequal sharing and grouping using knowledge of fractions and multiples
ADDITIONALLY there is a HANDS-ON RATIO & PROPORTION WITH FOOD for children to apply their understanding in context with cookies, pancakes, and pizza dough.
